Understanding and using the VAT calculator

What is VAT?

Value added tax is levied on many goods and services and calculated as a percentage of the net price.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net is the amount excluding VAT. VAT is the tax amount. Gross is the amount including VAT.

How is VAT added to a net amount?

VAT = net × rate / 100. Gross = net + VAT. Example: €100 net plus 19% gives €19 tax and €119 gross.

How is VAT extracted from a gross amount?

Net = gross / (1 + rate / 100). VAT = gross − net. Example: €119 gross at 19% contains €100 net and €19 VAT.

Why is VAT not simply gross times the rate?

19% of €119 would be €22.61 – that is not the included tax amount. The tax share is found via net extraction.

Which VAT rates apply?

Rates differ by country and may vary by goods or services. They can change and must be verified for each case.

How is rounding handled?

Money amounts are usually shown with two decimal places. Rounding differences may occur with different calculation methods.

What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?

In everyday language the terms are often used interchangeably, depending on context.

Can I use the calculator for invoices?

The tool supports simple math but does not verify legal invoice requirements.

Are my amounts stored?

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser.
