Understanding and using the character counter

What is a character counter?

A character counter measures text length and distinguishes characters, letters, digits, spaces, whitespace and symbols so you can see exactly what your text contains.

What counts as a character?

Characters include letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, symbols, emojis and line breaks. This tool counts Unicode code points – so visible characters such as A, é or 😊 each count as one character, not internal UTF-16 units.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters total include all whitespace such as normal spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces ignore whitespace entirely. Punctuation, symbols and emojis remain included in both values.

Do emojis count as one character?

JavaScript may represent some characters internally using multiple code units. This tool therefore uses Unicode-aware counting. Complex composed emojis may consist of several parts – results can differ slightly between programs.

Why do different programs show different character counts?

Reasons include UTF-16 code units, Unicode code points, visible grapheme clusters, composed emojis, combining accents, different handling of line breaks and non-breaking spaces.

What is a character counter used for?

Typical uses include social media posts, meta titles, meta descriptions, ads, forms, product descriptions, SMS texts, academic papers, job applications, database fields, software development and translations.

How does the character limit work?

You can enter a maximum limit freely. The tool shows used, remaining or exceeded characters. You can choose whether the limit applies to characters total or characters without spaces.

Are texts stored?

No. Processing happens entirely locally in your browser. No text is transmitted, stored or captured in tracking systems.

Frequently asked questions about the character counter

How can I count characters in a text?

Enter your text or paste it in. All metrics update automatically.

Are spaces counted?

Yes, in “Characters total”. For counting without spaces, use “Characters without spaces”.

How can I count characters without spaces?

“Characters without spaces” ignores all whitespace and counts only visible text components.

Do line breaks count as characters?

Yes. Line breaks count towards characters total and appear separately under “Other whitespace”.

Do tabs count as characters?

Yes. Tabs are included in the total character count and listed under “Other whitespace”.

Do emojis count as one character?

Usually yes – by Unicode code points. Complex emojis may be counted differently in other programs.

Are umlauts counted correctly?

Yes. Umlauts, ß and accented letters are counted as individual Unicode characters.

What is the difference between letters and characters?

Characters include everything in the text. Letters are alphabetic Unicode characters only – excluding digits, spaces and punctuation.

Are numbers counted as characters?

Yes. Digits count both as characters and separately under “Digits”.

Is punctuation included?

Yes. Punctuation and symbols count as characters and appear under “Punctuation and symbols”.

Can I set my own character limit?

Yes. Enter a limit or choose a quick value. The limit is not stored permanently.

How do I see how many characters are left?

With an active limit, the tool shows remaining or exceeded characters plus a progress bar.

Why does another program show a different character count?

Different counting methods, emojis, whitespace and line breaks can lead to different results.

Can I analyse very long texts?

Yes. The tool is optimised for longer texts and processes large input in the browser.

Is my text stored or transmitted?

No. Analysis happens entirely locally in your browser.

Does the tool work with English and other languages?

Yes. Unicode characters in different languages are supported.

Can I copy the statistics?

Yes. Use “Copy statistics” to put a compact summary on the clipboard.
