Understanding and using the word counter

What is a word counter?

A word counter analyses text and determines words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, lines and estimated reading and speaking times.

How are words counted?

Words are separated by spaces, line breaks and tabs. Punctuation alone does not count as a word. Hyphenated words such as e-mail count as one word. Where possible the tool uses Intl.Segmenter, otherwise a documented fallback.

Words or characters – what is the difference?

Characters with spaces count every Unicode character including spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces ignore whitespace. Words are content units and suit reading time, article length and manuscripts.

Why count words?

Typical uses include school and university work, blog posts, SEO copy, applications, product descriptions, social media posts, translations, manuscripts and speeches or presentations.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is based on 200 words per minute by default. Technical texts may be slower, simple texts faster. Actual reading time is individual.

How is speaking time calculated?

Speaking time is estimated at 130 words per minute. Pauses, emphasis, questions, slides and interaction can change the real duration significantly.

Why can different word counters show different results?

Differences arise with hyphens, apostrophes, abbreviations, URLs, numbers, emojis, special characters and different languages. Sentence detection is also heuristic only.

Are entered texts stored?

No. Analysis happens entirely locally in your browser. No text is transmitted, stored or sent to tracking systems.

Frequently asked questions about the word counter

How can I count words in a text?

Enter your text or paste it in. The word count and all other values update automatically.

Does the tool count characters with and without spaces?

Yes. Both values are shown separately and based on Unicode code points.

Are headings and lists counted?

Yes. All visible text in the input field is counted, regardless of how it is formatted.

How are hyphenated words counted?

Hyphenated words such as e-mail count as one word as long as they are not separated by spaces.

How are numbers counted?

Numbers are counted as words or word parts when they are not made up of punctuation only.

Do punctuation marks count as characters?

Yes. Punctuation is included in the character count but not counted as separate words.

How are paragraphs counted?

Paragraphs are text blocks separated by at least one blank line. Multiple blank lines do not create an extra paragraph.

How is reading time calculated?

From the word count and the set reading speed in words per minute. Default: 200 words per minute.

How is speaking time calculated?

Similar to reading time, default 130 words per minute. It is an estimate only.

Why might Microsoft Word show a different word count?

Word uses its own rules for footnotes, fields, hyphens, hyphenation and special cases, which can cause differences.

Can I analyse very long texts?

Yes. The tool is optimised for longer texts with debouncing and processes large input in the browser.

Is my text stored or transmitted?

No. Analysis happens entirely locally in your browser.

Does the tool work with English texts?

Yes. Unicode words in different languages are supported.

Are umlauts and special characters recognised correctly?

Yes. Counting is based on Unicode code points and modern word recognition rules.

Can I copy the statistics?
